Passive Voice
-
We use the Passive Voice when we
want to emphasize the action. The Doer is not important or unknown.
-
Usually, the Passive Voice is used
in the news report and recipes.
-
The Passive Voice is accompanied
by a “by” phrase, which is not always necessary and thus can be
omitted.
-
The structure of a sentence in the
Passive form differs from its structure in the Active form.
Active: Subject Verb Object … .
Passive: Object Verb
by Subject … .
Present Simple Present Progressive
Active: I read a book. Active: He is
watching TV now.
Passive: A book is read
by me. Passive: TV is
being watched by him now.

Active: She fixed her car yesterday. Active: We were doing
homework all last weekend.
Passive: Her car was fixed by her yesterday. Passive: Homework was being done

Active: They will visit you tomorrow. Active: You can buy a
new dress.
Passive: You will be visited by them tomorrow. Passive: A new dress can be bought

The English Sentence : (The
passive vs the active voice)
a. Active form:
EX: -The boy broke the window.
Subject

The focus is on the subject ( the doer) who performs the action expressed
in the verb.
b. Passive Voice:
EX: - The window was broken
(by the boy).
Object ( becomes subject)

The focus is not
on the subject, but on the action or the object which was acted upon.

Form of the Passive:
Subject + to be in the tense of the active verb + Past Participle
Note:
When
rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:
·
The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive
sentence.
·
The form of the verb is the appropriate form of to be (the tense of the
active voice main verb) + the past participle.
·
The subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive
sentence (or is dropped.)
